Avoriaz
Avoriaz village appears to be balanced on the top of the high cliff tops when looking from down below in neighbouring Morzine, and the allusion is even greater when you arrive into resort with towering peaks at every angle. With ski in ski-out as the standard in the sunny purpose built ski village, its location in the centre of the Portes Du Soleil has placed it solidly on the map as one of the best resorts in France.
The road up to Avoriaz, whilst offering stunning views, has many hair pins and gets very congested in bad weather and peak periods, which is why if your flight allows it we always recommended going to the Prodains telecabin instead, to save time. From here the 7-minute ride to the centre of the resort is quick and easy, where you can arrange onward travel (sleds, snow taxis and luggage carriers) to your accommodation.
Avoriaz is located at 1800m; you can tell it was carefully designed with its visitors in mind; it’s functional and easy to navigate. Well condensed, with shops and restaurants both in easy reach, but in no way claustrophobic. Families and young groups are well catered for here with a vast learners area and kids riglet park.
As a car-free resort the roads are replaced by pistes in Avoriaz, and you’ll have watch out for horse drawn carriages and snowcats scooting around resort. With an average snowfall of 8 meters Avoriaz is often named the snowiest in the French Alps and skiing can often be starting as early as November if the snow permits it.
Avoiraz offers a plethora of pistes, you’ll be spoilt for choice here with stunning tree lines runs as well as powder bowls, parks and off piste, but venturing further afield expands the opportunities further more. With a modern lift system in place, trips can be made over the neighbouring Portes du Soleil resorts of Champery, Morgins and Tourgon (all in Switzerland) as well as popular Chatel, with its parks for those into freestyle.
Avoriaz has some incredible après ski venues, one of the local favourites is Happy Hours at the bottom of the Ardent home run, expect wild fancy dress parties, live DJ’s a flowing punch cocktails. This year sees the entry of a huge name in the après ski market - La Folie Douce, we are certain it’ll bring in the crowds with live performances and plenty of champers.
